Speech 1 Text (17a)
1
I think there are at least two differences in the
way of business between Japanese and
American businessmen.
2
First, Japanese tend to have business
negotiation in a rather indirect manner, as
opposed to a direct manner of American
businessmen.
3
Japanese take time to see whether their
prospective business contacts are really reliable
as human beings, for example, by inviting them
to a party and socializing with them.
4
In contrast, Americans act with "get-downto-business-first" mentality.
5
Second, the decision-making process of
Japanese companies is considered to be very
slow and time-consuming.
6
This is because most Japanese companies have
the bottom-up decision-making system which
involves many people in the decision-making,
as opposed to the American companies which
usually operate with quick decisions made by
the top management.
7
I hope American businessmen will understand
these differences in business practices and
adjust to the Japanese way of business.

Speech 2 Text (17a)
I would like to discuss the three major
characteristics of employment practices of
Japanese companies.
First, most Japanese companies practice
lifetime employment, which guarantees a
long-term employment for workers.
It seems that Japanese companies do not fire
or lay off workers as easily as American
companies.
Second, most Japanese companies have a
policy of seniority system which gives
priority to older workers or workers with
longer careers, in terms of promotion and
wage increase.
The third characteristic of the Japanese
employment relationship is the idea of
company as "family" in which the company
plays a protective role of parents, while
employees play the role of children.
As far as I can see, most Japanese workers
seem to be relatively satisfied with these
employment practices.
.However, I suspect that it will be very
difficult for most companies to maintain
lifetime employment, as economic growth
slows down and competition becomes more
fierce.

Speech 3 Text (17a)
Today I would like to briefly introduce to you
the fundamental business philosophy of our
company.
Ever since the foundation of our company in
1925, the business philosophy of our
company includes trust, honesty, and
cooperation.
Having trust in each other is very important
because doing business requires a good
interpersonal relationship.
Honesty is the best policy, they say. Being
honest in business is indeed one of the best
strategies in order to win trust from our
customers.
Also, cooperation is essential in business. In
order to compete equally with other
companies cooperation in our company is
very important.
In this respect, we make a special effort to
establish good communication and
cooperative relationships between
management and labor, so we can discuss any
problems without hesitation.
Based on this philosophy, we are hoping to
contribute to our customers, employees and
the society as a whole.
